An Anniversary with a different perspective

It has been over a month since my last update, a period filled with subtle yet significant developments. Let me share the latest on my children’s progress and some personal reflections on this ongoing journey.

Brooks’ Journey Continues
Brooks is preparing for a new chapter at the University of Oregon, where he will continue his jazz studies. Despite some residual pain and numbness from his rib protection surgery and chest tube placements, his recovery has been remarkable. He has enjoyed working and making the most of his summer, a testament to his resilience and strength.

Lauren’s Determined Progress
Lauren remains committed to her rigorous rehabilitation routine, which includes various treatments and frequent gym visits where she embraces her “Beast mode.” Her strength is visibly growing, helping her manage her ongoing vision challenges and her return to tennis. Moreover, she has started working a few hours a week at an ice cream parlor—a positive step towards normalcy. She has decided to take a gap year to focus on her recovery before resuming her college education next fall. Her dedication is nothing short of inspiring.

The Subtleties of Healing
While outwardly life is resuming its rhythm, the underlying sense of change lingers. Though neither Brooks nor Lauren recalls the accident, discussions with friends and family who witnessed and experienced it alongside them are bringing some memories to the fore. These conversations are therapeutic yet emotionally complex, blending productivity with heartache.

A Milestone Amidst Recovery
Today, my wife and I celebrate our 26th anniversary, and this year feels distinctly different. Enduring such a traumatic event has not only highlighted our own hardships but also deepened our empathy and compassion for others’ struggles—elevating our default level of compassion to a new baseline.

Daily Reflections of Gratitude
Though days may pass without a direct thought of the accident, each morning as I shower, my mind and heart are filled with gratitude towards those who played a critical role in saving my children’s lives. This includes everyone from the bystanders at the accident site to the dedicated staff at St. Charles. This profound sense of gratitude reminds me of the warmth and fulfillment I felt in my youth while volunteering to feed the homeless—a reminder that giving truly is receiving.

Embracing the Goodwill
Historically, I’ve been uneasy about being on the receiving end of goodwill, often feeling that others were more deserving. However, the overwhelming support we’ve received has gradually lessened my discomfort. The continuous reflection on the support from our community is a new, enduring part of my life, a source of profound gratitude that, while it may slow, will forever remain a significant part of who I am.

I apologize if my words seem to circle around the feelings I’m trying to express. It’s challenging to encapsulate such deep and transformative experiences. However, I want to close by thanking everyone who has followed our story, offered support, and impacted our lives in myriad ways. Your kindness has humbled and uplifted us, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Thanks for following along.

The Clock Ticks a Little Softer

For the first time in a long while, I find myself just a little less afraid. Maybe it’s the changing seasons—no more ice on the roads, warm sun through the windows. Each time I drive to the club, it feels a little bit easier. A bit more normal. But every so often, something still catches

Facing fears and tears

In today’s world, we have numerous sources of information, from traditional news and social media to podcasts and text messages from friends. This wealth of information gives me a much better sense of the world than the limited options of the past, like just three TV stations and a newspaper—a setup I rarely engaged with,

Impermanence: Reflections on Change and Loss

Life has a way of reminding us about the impermanence of everything. Just when you think routines are set and some aspects of life seem unchangeable, something occurs that turns everything upside down. We once lived in Southern California, in a house that was more than just a structure; it was a symbol of personal
